Getting The Experience You Need.
Internships are designed to give you practical work experience in your major.
The purpose of a structured internship is to try to integrate what you learn in the classroom
with the "real world".
The advantages of doing an internship are:
- An ideal way of getting experience
- Helps you to learn about how people interact in the workplace
- Develop an understanding of the changing workplace
- Helps you develop contacts which are important for job hunting or applying
to graduate or professional school.
TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS
There are three types of Internships:
- Credit bearing Internships:
Some employers require students to obtain credit for
the internship.
Credit is granted through your major or minor department. Please check with your academic department to see if they have an internship program, how many hours per credit are required and any other requirement of the department. Students are expected
to meet all departmental prerequisites such as minimum number of credits in the subject or grade point average.
- Paid Internships
- Unpaid Internships

Internship Guidelines
- APPLICATION FORM
If the employer requires you to complete an application form, please obtain the form from the Internship Coordinator. The completed form should be returned to the Internship Coordinator who will submit it to the employer with a copy of your resume.
- WRITING SAMPLE
Occasionally employers request that a student submit a writing sample to them. If required, please submit your sample to the Internship Coordinator who will submit it to the employer along with your resume.
INTERNSHIP CHOICES
- Students are permitted to review the internship list and the books every two weeks and request that their resume be sent to four employers at a time. The internship list and books are available Monday-Thursdays, during regular office hours. The books will not be available to students on Fridays.
INTERVIEWS
- Employers will contact students directly to schedule an interview. Please dress appropriately for your interview and make sure that you are on time.
Students are required to notify the Internship Coordinator of where and when they have the interview.
LEARNING AGREEMENTS
- Internships are designed to be meaningful, structured learning experiences. In order to insure this, students are required to meet with the Internship Coordinator to notify the Office of the placement and to pick up a copy of the "Learning Agreement" form.
- This form must be completed by the student, signed by the employer and returned to the Internship Coordinator within the first two weeks of their internship. The Internship Coordinator will review and sign the completed Learning Agreement and provide a copy to both the student and the employer. The placement will not be formalized until this is completed. Therefore, it is very important that you complete the form, have your supervisor sign it and return it.
